Choosing the correct tarp size is one of the most overlooked aspects of tarp buying. A tarp that is too small won’t provide adequate coverage, while a tarp that is too large can be difficult to secure and manage.
The first step is measuring the area you need to cover. Always measure both width and length, and then add extra allowance for draping and tie-downs. Tarps are typically measured edge to edge, but usable coverage may be slightly less once the tarp is secured.
For flat coverage, adding one to two feet on each side is usually sufficient. For covering equipment, materials, or irregular shapes, additional allowance is recommended. This ensures the tarp can fully wrap around the item and be anchored properly.
Consider how the tarp will be secured. If you plan to use grommets, make sure the tarp size allows for even spacing and proper tension. Stretching a tarp too tightly increases the risk of tearing, even with reinforced hems.
Weight and material also influence sizing decisions. Heavier tarps are less likely to flap in the wind, so they can sometimes be sized closer to the covered area. Lightweight tarps may require additional overlap to stay secure.
Common tarp sizes are designed to handle typical use cases, such as equipment coverage, material storage, or structure protection. Selecting a standard size that closely matches your needs often provides the best balance of coverage and ease of use.
Choosing the right tarp size reduces waste, improves performance, and makes setup faster. Taking a few extra minutes to measure properly can save time and money over the life of the tarp.
